Founder of El Poder del Consumidor– Consumer Power
Alejandro Calvillo holds a Bachelors degree in Sociology from the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, Mexico City. He did his doctoral studies in Philosophy at the Universidad de Barcelona, Spain (degree pending).
Previously, Calvillo worked as Program Associate for Higher Learning in the Environment and Sustainable Development at El Colegio de México.
He is a founding member of Greenpeace México and spent 5 out of 12 active years serving as Executive Director.
He founded El Poder del Consumidor in 2006 which works on consumer advocacy and food policy. It aims at raising awareness on complex issues of food consumption, particularly related to children. He was the central actor in obtaining a tax for sugary drinks (sodas) and regulation of food and beverages in schools in Mexico.
He is active in numerous international forums on food policy and consumption including the Lancet Commission on Obesity.
